East Liverpool senior Jake Smith threw a no-hitter against East Palestine in a dominant 15-0 win in five innings on Friday. Smith, the Potters’ number one pitcher, delivered an outstanding performance that left his teammates and coach in awe.
Coach Brian May praised Smith’s pitching, stating, “He has pitched great for four years. He is our number one. He didn’t pitch on Monday, so we threw him today and he throws a gem and gets his first no-hitter ever.” Smith himself was surprised to learn he had pitched a no-hitter, with the realization sinking in only after his teammates congratulated him.
Smith’s near-perfect game was marred only by an error committed by third baseman Aaron Dieringer, allowing East Palestine’s Kyle Bourne to reach base. Despite this, Smith threw 37 strikes in 47 pitches, striking out seven batters with no walks.
The Potters’ offensive performance was equally impressive, with Malachi Reed leading the charge with four RBIs on two hits. The team’s improved hitting was a welcome sight for Coach May, who noted the difference from their previous game against Edison.
On the other side, East Palestine struggled to find their footing, with a young and inexperienced roster facing challenges early in the season. The team’s pitching depth took a hit during a preseason collision that resulted in injuries to key players.
Despite the tough start, East Palestine remains determined to improve and adapt to the changes on and off the field. With new ownership and potential upgrades to their home field, the Bulldogs are looking towards a brighter future.
Both teams will look to bounce back in their upcoming games, with East Liverpool facing Wheeling Park and East Palestine taking on Wellsville. Smith’s stellar performance will surely be a highlight for the Potters as they continue their season.
