The New York Yankees continued their hot start to the season with a 3-2 victory over the Cleveland Guardians in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday. Oswaldo Cabrera’s two-run homer proved to be the difference in the game as the Yankees improved to an MLB-best 11-3 record.
Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt delivered a solid performance, allowing just one run over five-plus innings before handing the ball over to the bullpen. Closer Clay Holmes had a tense ninth inning, giving up a leadoff double before striking out two batters and inducing a groundout to secure his sixth save of the season.
Cabrera, who had not played in the Yankees’ previous three games, made the most of his opportunity with a clutch home run in the sixth inning. His performance may earn him more playing time, especially after the Yankees placed Jon Berti on the injured list with a groin strain.
The Guardians made a late push in the sixth inning, scoring two runs on a fielding error by the Yankees. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome the Yankees’ lead.
Pitching for the Guardians, Carlos Carrasco had a solid outing, holding the Yankees to just one run over 4 2/3 innings. It was an emotional return to Cleveland for Carrasco, who was traded to the Mets in 2020.
The Yankees will look to continue their winning ways in the second game of the doubleheader, with Cody Poteet making his season debut against Triston McKenzie of the Guardians. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting matchup.
