The Bergen Equestrian Center in Leonia, NJ, is making waves in the mental health community with its innovative equine emotional wellness program, A Stable Life. Founded by Anna Gassib, the program offers therapy sessions with horses to help individuals dealing with a variety of mental health issues.
The program, which has been running for 12 years, aims to assist those struggling with anxiety, isolation, addiction, loss, phobias, and PTSD by engaging in non-riding activities with horses. The therapy sessions are tailored to each individual’s needs and are designed to help them develop life management skills.
Recently, the center opened a dedicated space for the program in Overpeck Park, Leonia, marking the county’s first equine emotional wellness program. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by local officials, nonprofit leaders, and program members, who celebrated this milestone.
Clients of A Stable Life range from 12 to 89 years old, showcasing the program’s ability to help individuals of all ages. The therapy sessions are conducted in partnership with mental health experts and focus on integrating feelings, thoughts, and behaviors that arise during interactions with the horses.
One client, Karen Arnone, shared the remarkable impact the program has had on her 15-year-old granddaughter, Jazmine, who has been managing PTSD after her mother’s murder. Arnone noted that the program has provided Jazmine with a safe space to heal, with the horses playing a crucial role in her recovery.
Overall, A Stable Life aims to provide a unique and effective form of therapy that combines the healing power of horses with traditional mental health practices. The program has already made a significant impact on the lives of many individuals and continues to expand its reach in the community.
