Disability Rights Connecticut has uncovered shocking findings in their investigation of the Connecticut Mental Health Center, revealing a culture of neglect and abuse towards vulnerable patients. The report detailed instances of sexual assault, inadequate care, and a disturbing infestation of mice within the facility.
Patients at the center, who suffer from serious mental illnesses, were allegedly subjected to sexual assaults that were not properly investigated. One woman, diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, was assaulted multiple times by a male patient and discharged without appropriate support. Another patient, diagnosed with schizophrenia, was reportedly physically and chemically restrained numerous times without proper documentation.
Furthermore, the report highlighted a lack of essential care for patients, including the absence of assigned psychologists and behavior plans. Patients were also reportedly denied access to clinical groups and subjected to a mouse infestation within the facility.
The Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services has disputed the findings, claiming that the center meets high standards of care set by the Joint Commission. However, Disability Rights Connecticut is calling for independent oversight of the facility and other state-run mental health facilities.
The organization is advocating for a system to monitor abuse claims, improve quality of care, and review the use of restraints and seclusions. Yale, which operates the center, has stated that they are committed to the safety and care of their patients and are continuously working to improve their services.
The disturbing revelations from the investigation have raised concerns about the treatment of psychiatric patients in Connecticut and the need for greater oversight to ensure their safety and well-being.
