Nearly four years after the tragic death of Maria Elias, accused killer Jose Juan Mata appeared in court in Fresno County on Wednesday to face a murder charge. The 30-year-old son of the victim seemed focused as his defense attorney questioned a former detective about Mata’s whereabouts at the time of the incident in May 2020.
The retired detective testified that Mata had not strayed far from the town, only traveling about 20 miles. Prosecutors presented their case to the judge for the second day, seeking to prove there is enough evidence for the trial to proceed.
Mata, who has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge and previously claimed insanity, underwent mental health evaluations. His attorney raised questions about his medication for schizophrenia, anxiety, and depression at the time of the crime.
During cross-examination, the detective revealed that Mata’s older brother had never witnessed him being violent towards their mother. The courtroom was filled with tension as graphic details of Elias’ death were discussed, including the presence of a blade in her chest and a power cord around her neck during the coroner’s examination.
As the proceedings continue, prosecutors plan to call more witnesses to testify before the judge makes a decision on whether Mata will stand trial. The case has gripped the community, with many eager to see justice served for Maria Elias.
