The launch of the Utah Pregnancy After Loss program at University of Utah Health is offering hope and healing to families who have experienced the devastating loss of a baby. Jaymie Maines, a mother who tragically lost her son James, shared her emotional journey and the importance of the support she received from a peer-to-peer family support group.
Maines described the heart-wrenching experience of delivering her stillborn son and the lack of compassion from her healthcare provider. However, she found solace in connecting with other women who had gone through similar losses, forming a support group that became essential to her healing process.
The Pregnancy After Loss program, led by Dr. Bob Silver, aims to provide sensitive care for families who have experienced stillbirth, newborn death, termination, recurrent pregnancy loss, placental disorders, and preterm birth. The program offers preconception counseling for those seeking to become pregnant again and comprehensive prenatal care for those who do conceive after a loss.
Dr. Silver emphasized the importance of addressing stillbirth rates in the United States and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to make a difference through the new clinic. Maines, who has since had three children delivered by Dr. Silver, highlighted the genuine care and interest he has shown throughout her pregnancies.
The ribbon-cutting event for the Pregnancy After Loss program was a symbol of hope for families like Maines, who have experienced unimaginable loss but now have a dedicated support system to guide them through their journey to healing and potentially welcoming new life into their families.
