Warren, Ohio – The community of Warren is mourning the loss of a beloved member, Joseph Gerald Smaltz, who passed away at the age of 89. Known for his dedication to his family, church, and community, Joe leaves behind a legacy of love and service.
Born in Sharon, Pennsylvania, Joe was a standout athlete from a young age. He excelled in both track and football, earning a full scholarship to John Carroll University where he continued to shine in both sports. His talent on the field led him to a career in professional football, playing for both the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Giants.
Despite his success in sports, Joe’s true passion lay in his faith and community involvement. He was a devoted member of St. Stephen Church in Niles, where he served on the parish council and finance committee. His commitment to his church was unwavering, and he was known for his generosity and kindness towards others.
In addition to his church work, Joe had a successful career in business, working for Arby’s Inc. as a franchise director and later becoming an Arby’s franchisee. He was also actively involved in various organizations, including the Ben Lin Club, Youngstown YMCA, and the John Carroll University Alumni Association.
Joe’s love for his family was evident in everything he did. He was a dedicated husband to his wife, Carol, and a loving father to his three sons and two daughters. He was also a proud grandfather to four grandchildren and a foster daughter, Maria Martin.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in Joe’s honor at St. Stephen Church in Niles, with calling hours at the Holloway-Williams Funeral Home & Cremation Service. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to be made to Joe’s favorite charities.
The community will remember Joe Smaltz for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for his family and community. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
