Montgomery’s Cooper Roman showcased his dedication and hard work paying off in a big way during Monday’s District 4 playoff game against Northwest. The freshman second baseman went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two stolen bases, leading Montgomery to an 8-0 victory in the quarterfinals.
Roman’s stellar performance at the plate, combined with strong pitching from Briar Persing, Parker Bennett, and Parker Persing, secured Montgomery’s first playoff win since 2019 and their first ever as a Class AA team. Roman’s work ethic and determination were on full display as he continued to put in extra work after practices and games to improve his hitting.
In addition to Roman’s standout performance, Bennett also had a strong game both on the mound and at the plate. Bennett, who improved to 5-0, allowed just one hit and struck out seven in 3 1/3 innings. He also contributed offensively with two hits and two RBIs, helping to secure the win for Montgomery.
Overall, Montgomery’s young team, which includes five freshmen, showed resilience and composure in their first playoff game. With the win, Montgomery advances to the semifinals and will face defending champion Wyalusing. The team’s focus on hard work and dedication has clearly paid off, setting them up for success as they continue their playoff journey.
