Caribbean Telecommunications Union Celebrates 35 Years of Technological Innovation
On May 01, 2024, the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) marked its 35th anniversary with a grand event in St Clair, Port of Spain. Secretary General Rodney Taylor addressed the media, invited guests, and secondary school students, reflecting on the significant changes in the Caribbean’s telecommunications landscape since the CTU’s establishment in 1989.
Back then, the region was dominated by state-owned monopolies, limited competition, and high prices for telecommunications services. The focus was primarily on basic voice communication, with limited access to advanced technologies like mobile networks. However, over the years, the CTU and other regional organizations played a pivotal role in promoting collaboration, innovation, and investment in the sector.
Today, the Caribbean boasts a diversified and technologically advanced telecommunications environment. Mobile penetration rates are high, broadband internet access is widespread, and services have expanded to include mobile and internet services, digital TV, and value-added services like mobile banking and e-commerce.
The CTU continues to advocate for regional integration, harmonization of policies, and the reduction of roaming charges within CARICOM. With the support of partners like the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Commonwealth Secretariat, the CTU is working towards creating a more harmonized ICT regulatory framework within CARICOM.
As the region embraces digital transformation and ICT development, the CTU remains committed to representing the interests of the Caribbean in international ICT policy development processes. With a focus on connectivity, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies, the CTU aims to drive economic growth, improve governance, and enhance the quality of life for all citizens in the Caribbean.
As the CTU celebrates 35 years of technological innovation and leadership, Secretary General Rodney Taylor calls on stakeholders to support the work of the CTU in advancing the region’s telecommunications sector and promoting a unified digital market for the benefit of all Caribbean nations.
