Artificial Intelligence and the ongoing digital revolution are set to revolutionize the world and its agrifood systems, according to the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Qu Dongyu. Speaking at the Business Federations of the G7 (B7) meeting in Rome, Qu emphasized that AI is not just a technological shift but a driver of fundamental economic and social transformation.
Qu highlighted the potential benefits of digital agriculture, including improved pricing data, reduced food loss and waste, enhanced food safety, and the promotion of better farming practices. The event, held at the headquarters of Italy’s main business association, Confindustria, brought together key business leaders from G7 countries and the European Union.
The FAO Director-General stressed the importance of global cooperation in harnessing the power of AI and other enabling innovations. He called for a comprehensive approach involving governments, academia, the private sector, civil society, and international organizations to ensure the positive impact of these technologies.
Qu also addressed the need for collaboration in the energy sector, noting that decarbonization by 2050 is dependent on addressing energy consumption in agrifood systems. He urged private-sector actors to take more ambitious climate action and to prioritize accountability in their supply chains.
Overall, Qu’s remarks underscored the transformative potential of AI in agriculture and the importance of inclusive and sustainable development in the face of global challenges. FAO is committed to working with partners to ensure that these technologies benefit all populations and contribute to a more efficient and sustainable food system.
