Eleven-year-old Athena Elling made history on Thursday as she graduated from Irvine Valley College in California with an associate’s degree in liberal arts, earning cum laude honors. While most of her fellow graduates were between 19 and 21 years old, Athena stood out as the youngest in the class.
Athena’s mother, Christina Chow, shared that the community college provided her daughter with the opportunity to explore a variety of interests, from wanting to be a divorce attorney to an allergist to an actor. This flexibility allowed Athena to pursue her passions and excel in her studies.
This achievement runs in the family, as Athena’s older brother, Tycho Elling, set the record for the youngest graduate from Irvine Valley College last year at the age of 11. Inspired by her brother’s accomplishment, Athena was motivated to follow in his footsteps and set a new record.
Despite her young age, Athena is a second-degree black belt in taekwondo and is actively involved in acting and dance outside of her college studies. She credits her diverse interests for enriching her college experience and providing her with a well-rounded education.
Looking ahead, Athena plans to pursue multiple other associate’s degrees and continue her academic journey. When asked for advice for her older classmates, Athena simply said, “Just never give up.” Her determination and passion for learning serve as an inspiration to all who know her.
